Moving Insurance and Damage Claims in BC: What Is Covered and What Is Not
Most movers carry basic liability coverage that has limits and often does not equal the replacement value of what you own. Ask how your mover's coverage is calculated, check what your own home or tenant policy covers in transit, and document the condition of valuable items before the move.

What kinds of coverage apply to a move?
Several policies can be involved in one move. Knowing which one applies to which item is the whole game, and it is far easier to sort out before moving day than after.
The mover's basic liability
This is usually included with the move and usually has a limit. Some movers calculate it by weight rather than by what an item is worth. Ask how yours works and get it in writing.
Added or declared-value coverage
Some movers offer higher coverage for a fee, based on a value you declare. Ask what it costs, what it covers and what proof of value you need.
Your home or tenant insurance
Some policies cover belongings in transit, but many limit or exclude it. Ask your insurer before moving day, and ask about temporary coverage if you own valuable items.
Insurance for the building
Some stratas ask for proof that the moving company is insured before approving a move. Request a certificate early. See the [strata move-in guide](/guides/strata-move-in-booking-surrey).
What is usually not covered?
Every policy is different, so read yours. These are the exclusions and limits that most often surprise people.
- Cash, jewellery, documents, keys and other irreplaceable items. Carry these yourself.
- Hazardous or perishable items that movers cannot transport.
- The contents of boxes you packed yourself. Many policies treat these differently unless the box itself shows clear damage.
- Damage that was already there, and normal wear.
- High-value items that were not described to the mover before the move.
- Damage that is not reported within the time your agreement allows.
What should I do before moving day?
- Photograph valuable furniture, electronics and artwork, and keep receipts or proof of value.
- Tell your mover about any high-value or fragile item when you request your quote.
- Ask for the mover's coverage terms in writing, including how claims are valued.
- Check what your own home or tenant policy covers in transit.
- Ask your strata whether it needs proof of insurance, and pass the request to your mover early.
- Keep jewellery, documents, medication and other irreplaceables with you.
What if something is damaged on moving day?
- Tell the crew lead right away and show them the damage.
- Photograph the item and the damage before anything is repaired or thrown out.
- Note the damage in writing on any inventory or delivery form before you sign it.
- Keep broken items and their packaging until the claim is settled.
- Do not wait for the next week. Report it the same day if you can.
How do I make a damage claim in BC?
Report the damage in writing as soon as you notice it, and within any time limit your moving agreement sets. Include photos, a description of the item, its age and value, and a repair or replacement estimate. Keep copies of everything you send.
If you and the mover cannot agree, the BC Civil Resolution Tribunal handles small claims up to $5,000 online, and the Provincial Court of BC handles claims between $5,001 and $35,000. Check the Tribunal's website for current limits and steps. This is general information, not legal advice.

Common questions
Does my home or tenant insurance cover items during a move?
It depends on the policy. Some cover belongings in transit, but many limit or exclude it. Ask your insurer before moving day.
Are movers responsible for items they damage?
Movers are generally responsible for damage they cause, but the amount depends on the coverage terms in your agreement. Read those terms before you book.
Should I buy extra moving insurance?
Consider it if your most valuable items are worth more than the mover's standard limit. Compare the cost of added coverage with what your own policy already provides.
How long do I have to report damage?
It depends on your moving agreement. Report in writing as soon as you notice, ideally the same day, and keep your photos.
What if the move damages the building?
Some stratas hold a deposit or ask for proof of the mover's insurance. Photograph common areas before and after the move, and report any damage to the strata and your mover right away.
