What does a local move cost in Surrey by home size?

Local moves are billed by the hour, so your total is the hourly rate for your crew and truck multiplied by the hours the job takes. Our hourly rates run from $135 to $255 an hour depending on crew and truck size, with usually a 3-hour minimum, plus travel time and 5% GST.

The estimates below use the typical crew and hours for each home size and our published hourly rates. They are rounded, and they leave out travel time and GST.

Studio or 1 bedroom

2 movers and a 16 ft truck for 3 to 4 hours. About $405 to $600 at $135 to $150 an hour.

2 bedrooms

3 movers and an 18 ft truck for 3 to 5 hours. About $510 to $945 at $169 to $189 an hour.

3 bedroom house

3 to 4 movers for 5 to 8 hours. About $845 to $2,040, depending on crew and truck size.

4+ bedroom house

4 movers and a 27 ft truck for 7 to 10 hours or more. About $1,645 to $2,550 or more at $235 to $255 an hour.

A worked example: a two-bedroom condo

Say you are moving a two-bedroom condo with three movers at $169 an hour and the job takes 4 hours. That is 4 x $169 = $676. If the drive between your two addresses adds 30 minutes, that is another $84.50, for $760.50. Add about $38 of GST and the total comes to about $799.

The 3-hour minimum matters most on small moves. A studio that is loaded and unloaded in 2 hours is still billed for 3, so 3 x $135 = $405 before travel and GST.

What pushes the total up or down?

Stairs and long carries

Walk-ups, narrow hallways and a truck parked far from the door add handling time on both ends.

How ready you are

Boxes that are packed, sealed and labelled load far faster than loose items. Cluttered rooms cost more hours.

Waiting time

Time spent waiting for an elevator or a parking spot counts toward the hourly total. See the [strata move-in guide](/guides/strata-move-in-booking-surrey) for how to book access early.

Distance between addresses

Travel time between your locations is added to the hourly total, so a Surrey to Burnaby move costs more than one across Newton.

Furniture to take apart

Beds, desks and shelving that need disassembly and reassembly add time.

Special items

A [piano](/services/piano-moving) or other specialty item is quoted individually, so it is not in these estimates.

How to keep the total down

  • Pack, seal and label every box before the crew arrives.
  • Sell or donate what you do not need, so you do not pay to move it.
  • Book the elevator or loading zone early so the crew never waits.
  • Make sure the truck can park close to the door at both addresses.
  • Take apart beds and desks ahead of time, or tell us so we can plan the time.
  • Send photos and a room list with your quote request so the crew size is right the first time.

What is not in these numbers

Packing materials and packing services, unpacking, storage and specialty items are quoted individually and in writing before you book. Long distance moves are quoted for the route rather than billed by the hour.

For the full rate table and billing terms, see the pricing page. To see how crew size and hours are chosen, read how many movers you need and how long a move takes.
